FAQ
What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent, synthetic lashes that are applied individually (1:1 for classics) or in fans (2-7:1Russian Volume) to one natural eyelash with a medical grade adhesive. Eyelash extensions are designed to imitate natural lashes by being thicker at the base and narrowing at the tip. Unlike human hair these lashes hold their shape.
What is a lash lift
A lash lift is a service that redirects the natural lash from the base of the lash line in a soft upward motion. This upward curl will instantly open your eyes and give the illusion of longer natural lashes. Accompanied with a tint you can achieve that perfect mascara look with your natural lashes without the need to wear eye makeup.
As a lash lift changes the direction of the natural lashes, the end result will depend on your natural lashes to begin with. However everyone will notice a beautiful difference!
Do eyelash extensions damage my natural lashes?
When your lash extensions are applied with us, there will be no damage to your natural lashes. We tailor every set of extensions, at every visit, to your natural lashes to ensure only the correct length, thickness and weight of extension is applied that will not compromise the health of your natural lash. When the correct extensions are applied to correctly isolated natural lashes
(stuck to one natural lash at a time) , you will not experience any damage. We conduct a consultation at the beginning of the appointment where we will discuss your expectations and what you can expect to achieve. Each set of extensions are tailored to not only your natural lashes, but your eye shape and expectations, to provide you with the most fitting set of lashes. We never compromise the health of your natural lashes and will always have an open, transparent consultation with you if we feel your expectations are not suitable to what you can hold.
However this said, there is A LOT of damage that is being seen in the lash industry at the moment. This is from poorly trained (if trained at all) lash technicians that are overloading natural lashes with extensions that are too long, thick and heavy for the natural lashes. There is also a high portion of lash technicians that are not practising proper isolation or hygiene and sanitation which is also contributing to damaged natural lashes. We unfortunately see a lot of bad work that we are replacing or removing on a regular basis so please make sure you are going to a reputable lash artist.
Do you use animal fur for eyelash extensions?
Hell no! We do not condone or contribute to the fur trade.
Real Mink is still a think in our industry. Real Mink is real animal fur. A Mink is an animal that belongs to the same family as Otters and Ferrets. Minks are cruelly farmed in horrendous conditions for their fur and often gassed or skinned alive to obtain their fur. THIS IS NOT OK! Not only do these extensions contribute to animal cruelty, but the lashes themselves are not good for allergies, the lash/fur itself often flattens to straight over time (as it is processed to curl it) and it can also create inconsistent sets of lashes because they are often inconsistent in thickness and curl.
WE USE PBT FIBRES. Our industry still uses the terms Faux Mink and Silk, these have no links to the animals but are simply terms that came about through marketing many years ago. They are both made of synthetic fibres called PBT (the same materials as your toothbrush bristles but of course a different colour and 100 times thinner, softer and curled). These synthetic fibres mean we can offer deep dark blacks as well as a range of other colours, strong lashes that are resilient and hold their curl, and have varying lengths and thicknesses so we can create customised extensions for you. They are so much better than real fur on EVERY level!
Can I have extensions or a lash lift if I wear glasses and contact lenses?
YES definitely!
For your appointment please remove your contact lenses (for safety reasons) and wear your glasses. This will ensure the length of your extensions suit your lifestyle and do not hit the lenses of your glasses.
Can I wear eyelash extensions?
Most people can wear eyelash extensions! The main question is what set would be suitable for your natural lashes and expectations as it definitely is not ‘one size fits all’. They are low maintenance and perfect for both everyday wear as well as special occasions.
It is not advised to get eyelash extensions if you have experienced an allergic reaction to them in the past, have had chemotherapy in the last 6 months or going through it currently, as pregnant, have an eye infection currently or cannot lay still for the allocated time.
Issues like your eyes not closing properly, having watery or fluttery eyes, being an eye rubber/picker will also affect whether or not you would be a candidate for eyelash extensions. Feel free to get in touch if you have any concerns you may not be suitable and we can discuss this with you.
Who can apply them? Can I apply them on myself?
No you cannot apply these yourself. Only a trained eyelash professional should be applying eyelash extensions to ensure safety and hygiene guidelines are met.
Please be careful where you get eyelash extensions applied as there are currently many individuals who claim to be experts that have little knowledge and experience. It is work produced by some of these people that can often give the industry a bad name and give someone that one bad experience that will put them off.
Please do not make your decision based on price alone, we have seen very poor work from clients that have used both cheap and expensive lash stylists.
Do eyelash extensions hurt?
No way! There should be no discomfort at all. In fact most people get so comfortable they fall asleep for the majority of the appointment. You will hardly even feel our light hands working on your lashes.
(Unfortunately we have heard from clients that they have experienced pain or discomfort elsewhere, but that is not normal and if you have experienced this then your lash artist is doing something wrong. Speak with your lash artist so they know something is causing you discomfort, but it is NOT normal.)
A well applied set of eyelash extensions should be weightless with you barely being able to feel you have them on. If you have experienced a painful set of lash extensions then chances are you have been subject to a poorly selected and applied set.
What is the difference between false lashes and semi-permanent lash extensions?
Semi-permanent lashes need to be applied by a trained professional, using a medical grade glue to apply them individually to each natural eyelash.
False lashes are usually strip or clusters that either you or a makeup artist can apply. These use a latex glue that lasts 2-8 hours before the lashes start to fall off and need to be reapplied, they are designed for one off wear. They CANNOT be used with medical grade glue as all your natural lashes will get stuck together and will not be able to grow individually or freely which will cause balding on your lash line and thinner damaged lashes.
What do I need to do to prepare for my lash appointment?
To prepare for your appointment please remove ALL eye make-up including the eye area. We strongly recommend avoiding mascara for 24 hours prior to the appointment (if you can) as some mascaras can leave a barrier film behind that will affect the ability to lift them or get a good bond on the natural lash.
Please do not consume any caffeine for 3-4 hours before your appointment (this includes coffee, tea, protein drinks, energy drinks, coke etc). Caffeine makes you restless which will impact your ability to lay still and relax during the appointment, but it also makes your eyelids very fluttery which can often make lashing very difficult or impossible, and may affect your retention.
If you wear contact lenses, please remove them or bring your case to store them in during your appointment. If you wear glasses, we advise wearing them or making us aware so we can make sure the lengths and curls are tailored as to not touch your lenses.
Do not schedule any facials, steam, saunas, or heavy exercise that will make you sweat for 24-48 hours after you appointment. Same goes for swimming and hot tubs.
Please be on time. This means not early, and not late, simply on time. If you are early please kindly wait in your car as we run our day in back to back appointments and will not be available to accommodate you and earlier.
How do I look after my new lash extensions?
Don’t worry we will cover this in your appointment! But in the meantime:
- Be gentle with your lashes, do not touch your extensions with your fingers (they are naturally oily). Do not rub them, pull them or pick them.
- Wash your eyes and lashes regularly with a lash cleanser to give yourself the best retention and keep them hygienic.
- Brush them regularly with the lash wand we will give you
- Where you can avoid sleeping on your eyes. We recommend silk or satin pillowcases for side sleepers as it will cause less friction on the lashes when your face rubs on it at night.
- Avoid oils on the lash line and immediate eye area
- To keep extensions looking their best we recommend coming in for refills every 3 weeks.
You can read more about lash aftercare here.
How long will my appointment take?
This answer really depends on the service itself. The times can vary from 30 – 120 minutes.
Lifts, Refills, Classic, Volume & refills all differ in application time as they all apply a different amount of lashes during the application. Please select your set of lashes on the booking page and we will give you a maximum guideline of how long the appointment will take. Generally it may be quicker, but we allow for the maximum on our booking system to take into account those blessed with a million lashes.
Please note that if you are late to your appointment or arrive with dirty/makeup covered lashes, this will eat into your lashing time. We will not extend your appointment for these reasons and will affect what we can achieve in the time left.
How long do eyelash extensions last?
Properly applied eyelash extensions can last forever with regular refills.
This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on factors like the full set you have had applied, your natural lash cycle and your aftercare. Peoples lash cycle can vary so you may find your set can look fuller some months more than the next, especially during the spring and autumn shed (where as mammals we lose more hair naturally during these seasons). It is recommended to get refills every 2-3weeks to maintain your lashes and keeping them looking their best.
Hormones, medication, make-up, sleeping patterns (face planter), picking them, how you look after them can all affect the longevity of the extensions. Don’t worry we will cover this with you in your appointment.
How long does a lash lift last?
The results of a lash lift can last up to 8 weeks, some even get 10 weeks out of it!
We recommend coming in every 6-8 weeks to have them re-lifted.
Why do I need to come back for lash refills when I get extensions?
Naturally we lose 2-5 lashes per eye per day, therefore after 2-3 weeks most people have lost enough lashes that they need to be refilled to keep them looking their best. Also in this time, some extensions have grown out, so it is important we remove and replace them to keep them healthy and looking their best.
Depending on how fast you shed your natural lashes and the look you want to maintain determines whether you would rather come back in 2,3,or 4 weeks. Aftercare/how you look after your lashes will also be a huge contributor to the retention of your lashes. Looking after them properly will limit any premature loss
Can I wear make up with my new lashes?
Yes, you can wear make-up but having eyelash extensions will remove the need to wear mascara every day. We do not advise you to use mascara whilst you have lash extensions on or plan to have them refilled. With a lash lift mascara use is totally fine and will not affect your lift.
In regards to extensions, there are two main reasons mascara is not advised. It is not advised due to hygiene as (trust us) you simply will not get it all back out and then the left over makeup and dirt and debris at the base of your lashes will become a breeding ground for bacteria. It will close your lashes and clump them together altering the look of the extensions (which especially if you are getting Russian Volumes will waist all the beautiful dense fluffy lashes and they won’t return back to normal). Mascara will cause retention issues due to the ingredients in the mascara as well as the process of removing it. This also applies to wearing false strip lashes over extensions.
If you come to an appointment with false strip adhesive or makeup clogged into your lashes, we will remove it during your lashing time. We will not extend your appointment time to clean your lashes unless we charge you an additional fee, so if you want to maximise the amount of lashes applied at your appointment, please arrive with squeaky clean lashes. Wearing mascara can often leave an invisible barrier film on the lashes. If you do wear mascara before your appointment, it needs to be removed at least 24 hours before the appointment to ensure there is no barrier on your natural lash that will affect the extension sticking properly which would cause retention problems (how long your extensions will last).
Eyeliner can also have similar issues to mascara. We advise using a wet and dry dark eyeshadow and applying it with an angled brush to look like eyeliner. That way it will not get stuck in the lash line and will easily wash out. There is no problem with using eyeshadows, but again it comes down to how/what you remove it with that can often be the issue. Waterproof/smudge-proof eye makeup and removers are the biggest ones to avoid.
Can I get my lashes wet?
Yes of course! You NEED to get your lashes wet because it is essential you uphold good health and hygiene on your eye area. By not washing your lashes or getting them wet (which often people think will prolong the extensions), you are allowing your lash line to become a breeding ground for bacteria. Lashes are designed to stop debris and dirt getting into our eyes, but if this is not washed away then it can cause build up and ultimately block out hair follicles, resulting in your natural lash line becoming damaged (losing lashes, lashes not growing, finer lashes) purely from a lack of hygiene. Your eye area can also be one of the oiliest parts of the body, natural oils, moisturisers, make up etc will affect the longevity of the extensions so it is essential to wash them regularly. We can advise you on specific lash cleansers that will not damage the extensions or affect retention whilst still giving you a good antibacterial clean.
Having eyelash extensions should not impact any of your usual hobbies and activities.
Can I remove eyelash extensions?
Yes, by an experienced lash stylist, they can be gently removed. However do not attempt to remove them yourself, pulling or twisting them will result in damage to your natural lashes.
Do eyelash extensions make my natural lashes fall out?
Not at all. As the extensions are attached to individual natural lashes, they will fall out when your natural lashes shed, which for most people is on a 60-90 day cycle. Only poorly applied lash extensions that are too heavy for your natural lashes will cause premature natural shedding.
Is it possible to get an allergic reaction?
As Eyelash Extensions are adhered to your natural lashes and they do not come into contact with your skin, you should have minimal chance of having an allergic reaction, however yes of course it does exist. You will not get an allergic reaction to the extension itself, however there is a small chance you can get an allergic reaction to the glue (or other products used like the cleanser, eye pads etc). We can also build an intolerance to the adhesive/ingredients at any point in our lashing life even after 10 years, although it is not overly common. Allergic reactions are not very common, but if you do experience any discomfort please get in touch immediately. We offer free removals within the first 3 days of application for anyone that may experience an unforeseen issue.
There is also a chance that you can have an allergic reaction to lash lifts or tints. Patch tests are available and advised.
If you feel you may be at risk then please consult with us prior to your appointment to pop in for a patch test.
If you have experienced an allergic reaction in the past it is essential you speak with a member of our team before you book in. Unless it turns out that it wasn’t an allergic reaction (for example you may have been sensitive to the fumes in the adhesive not allergic), then you will still be allergic!
